The currency in Bangladesh is called Bangladeshi taka (ISO code BDT).
Origins and history
The Taka was introduced in the newly-born Bangladesh (former East Pakistan province) when it gained its independence from Pakistan in 1971.
In 1972, Bangladesh decided to change the Pakistan rupee for its new currency, the Taka.
Current Bangladeshi Taka coins and banknotes
The coins and banknotes denominated in Takas are issued in the Bangladesh Bank.
The signature of the Central Bank governor appears in every banknote, except in the 1 taka ones, because those are under the Bangladeshi Ministry of Economy.
Currently, there are coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 poishas and 1, 2, and 5 takas in circulation.
Regarding banknotes, the following denominations are currently in circulation: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 takas.
